The Colonial Italian American Organization Foundation 2019 Scholarship Program


CIAO was established in 1988, in the city of Williamsburg, Virginia. Originally, its focus was to provide Americans of Italian descent, and their spouses, the opportunity to meet and form enduring friendships with one another through social gatherings, cultural and educational events, and dinners. Recognizing that there are many non-Italians with Italy in their hearts, CIAO is now open to everyone. It remains dedicated, however, to providing its membership with a variety of enjoyable activities. Events include regular social gatherings, most with presentations; an Italian Film Festival in January/February/March; special dinners, to include a Valentine’s Day Dinner/Dance in February, a Scholarship Awards Dinner in May, a Summer Picnic in June and a Christmas Dinner/Party in December. There are also planned day trips as determined by the level of interest of club members. Finally, there is an informal Italian Round Table where individuals can learn and practice the Italian language. The CIAO Social Club oversees the various social activities.

In 1989, CIAO decided to initiate a charitable outreach program in the local community, focusing on education. CIAO made its first monetary awards that year to local high school and college students to help them further their academic studies. Over the years, CIAO has continued its positive engagement with the local community through its flagship Scholarship Awards Program as well as other charitable endeavors. The CIAO Foundation oversees these charitable efforts.

To be eligible for a CIAO Foundation award, an applicant must be:
A student attending Bruton, Jamestown, Lafayette or Warhill High Schools, Providence Classical, Walsingham Academy, Veritas Preparatory School or Williamsburg Christian Academy or a home-schooled student living in a school district served by these schools;
Have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or above;
Planning to pursue full-time study, as defined by the institution he or she will be attending, for the entire academic year for which this award is to be used.

Submission of this application authorizes the CIAO Foundation to verify all information, including your GPA, SAT scores, and school activities participation, with your high school counselor.

All applications will be reviewed and scored by the CIAO Scholarship Committee. Scholarship awards will be announced no later than the first week of May, at which time the recipients will confirm the educational institution that they have decided to attend.

  • The CIAO Foundation Scholarship Committee will consider the applicant's financial need. Therefore, certain financial information is required by the Committee will hold it in strict confidence.

Appropriate individuals may include a teacher, your school counselor, a neighbor, church member, employer or a representative of an organization of which you are a member.   • 19. STUDENT AND PARENT VERIFICATION STATEMENT: I verify that I personally completed all aspects of this application and that all of the information is true and accurate. I also consent that if chosen as a scholarship winner my picture may be taken and used to promote the CIAO Foundation’s Scholarship Program. I understand that, if chosen as a scholarship winner, it is my responsibility to remit to the CIAO Foundation the appropriate information to confirm admission to my educational institution of choice and for my scholarship to be paid directly to my educational institution. I understand that award checks will be sent directly from CIAO, in two payments, to the registrar of my chosen institution, $2,000 prior to the fall 2019 semester and $2,000 prior to the spring 2020 semester. I understand further that if, for any reason, I do not register as a full-time student for either semester, I must immediately advise the CIAO Foundation of this fact. I understand that, if my fall 2019 GPA is below 2.0, the award for the spring 2020 semester may be withheld, pending a review by the CIAO Foundation Scholarship Committee. I hereby understand I will not submit this application without all required attachments and supporting information. Incomplete applications or applications that do not meet eligibility criteria will not be considered for this scholarship.
